In a continued effort to ensure the safety and well-being of our students here at school, we are asking for your understanding and cooperation with the following message from the school administration:
Approximately 1:13 school-aged children in the United States have a potentially life threatening food allergy. More than 15% of these have had an allergic reaction at school. These reactions range from mild to severe to even fatal. (CDC.org2014). Even a small amount ingested allergen can cause a rapid reaction (anaphylaxis).
We have many strategies in place to ensure the physical and emotional well-being and safety of our students with food allergies. Teachers are provided anaphylaxis and allergy awareness training yearly. Classroom teachers that have a student with a life threatening food allergy have direct hands on training in administering life-saving medication (epi pen). Teachers notify parents of any planned event involving food. Cafeteria staff and bus drivers are informed as well. Mrs. Chandler, our school nurse, develops an individualized health plan that addresses all of the above.
To expand on our efforts, we are asking for your cooperation regarding any food that may be brought into the school for birthdays, special occasions or celebrations, etc. Please coordinate with the classroom teacher if at all possible before the event. This allows us to determine a safe food plan for the allergic student. If you have been to the school recently, you will notice signs at our front door and office asking anyone with cupcakes, treats, etc. to check with our front office staff before proceeding to the cafeteria/classroom. Our front office staff will check the list of teachers that have any students with food allergies (provided by Mrs. Chandler). The staff will contact the teacher to ensure that a plan is in place. The school nurse, Mrs. Chandler, will assist if needed.
Thank you for helping us to ensure the safety and well-being of all of our students at Matoaka Elementary School!!!!
