Did your student come home wearing a “I Vote Green,” “I Vote Yellow” or “I Vote Red” sticker recently?
Team Green, Team Yellow and Team Red were on hand Thursday, October 3rd to celebrate Pepperpalooza in the school cafeteria. As part of Matoaka’s Healthy Lifestyle Local Produce Initiative, fresh-from-the-farm bell peppers were delivered from Toano based Kelrae Farm, and served during lunch.
To encourage the children to try the peppers, they were given the opportunity to sample each color and pick their favorite.
More than 500 Matoaka students sampled the peppers and voted in the contest! Children sported “I Vote Red”, “I Vote Green” or “I Vote Yellow” stickers to share their vote.
Despite a strong effort by Team Green, Red Peppers were the winner with 235 votes. Green Peppers were a close second with 192 votes.
Said one 3rd grader, “I never knew I even liked peppers!”
Raw peppers make a great classroom snack or lunch dish.
