We take healthy lifestyles very seriously at Matoaka – so seriously in fact that an entire week in November is dedicated to promoting and encouraging health and wellness. In celebration of Healthy Lifestyles Week, Matoaka’s PTA sponsored Healthy Lifestyles Committee organized a variety of fun and educational events to promote health and wellness at our school.
Chef Chris from 2nd Street Restaurant of Williamsburg (and Matoaka Dad!) joined us again to cook up some tasty treats for our students using our fresh and local squash. The squash, provided as part of the PTA sponsored Local Produce Initiative, was also featured on the lunch line.
Other activities included visits from the OrganWise Guys, morning “Fitness Minutes” and “Applepalooza” courtesy of Turkey Knob Orchard of Timberville VA (www.turkeyknobapples.com) who was generous enough to donate an apple to every student at Matoaka in honor of Healthy Lifestyles Week! That’s more than 700 apples! Turkey Knob believes that we all have an important role to play in building healthy and happy schools and children.
Have you ever tasted a fresh, Virginia grown apple?
Our students were able to discover first hand how much better a fresh, local apple tastes compared to the ones you get from some of the grocery stores. Turkey Knob’s apples are grown in their family-owned orchard in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and allowed to ripen on the tree. This means they offer more flavor and nutrients than most store bought apples. They are simply delicious!
Said one Matoaka 3rd grader, “that was the best apple I have ever had!”
THANK YOU Turkey Knob for appreciating the importance of healthy eating for kids!
